Recalling the one who mixed politics and poetry

NEW YORK — At a time when we plainly see the negative effects of politics and greed in the life of nations, it is important to remember Pablo Neruda, a Chilean writer whom Gabriel Garcia Marquez called “the greatest poet of the 20th century — in any language.” He was an artist who knew very well how to blend politics and poetry in his life.

A pick-up lunch and a free uniform.

My father’s farm in Sujawal is an expanse of waterlogged fields in the Indus delta, chequered with rice crops, fetid ponds, desert scrub, and an intersecting road with no speed limits.  Overloaded buses careen on it,some  filled with produce, others with humans.  The sounds of herons, dragonflies and weaver birds are interspersed with bursts of noise from radios and engines with no silencers.
